Under this is a small sculpture of a man's face with a scarf on his head. This is a portrait of Ghiberti. A third image is of a set of doors with bronze sculptured scenes on it.

Ciao! I am Lorenzo Ghiberti! I was born and grew up near Firenze, Italia, but I guess you say it Florence, Italy.

My father was a goldsmith, so I received my training in goldsmithing.

In 1401, I won a competition to design a new bronze door for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence. Can you believe that my life work was creating beautiful sculptures on a door of a baptistery, the place where they baptize believers? Really, I spent most of life on this project.

You see, after I won the competition to create the doors, I spent years creating 28 square blocks depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his crucifixion and resurrection, to tell the story of Redemption, or how he saved us from our sins. I also included sculptures of famous saints like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John with a special touch of flowers and plants around the edges.

All in all, it took me 21 years to complete these doors, and they were hung on the north side of the Baptistery at Easter in 1424.

A year later, I received a commission to create a second set of doors!

This time I made ten panels showing scenes from the Old Testament including Creation and the Fall,…

…David and Goliath, and others!

First, I carved the scenes, then I cast them in bronze, and then I polished and gilded the panels. I had lots of other artists helping me.

This second set of doors took 27 years and were hung in 1452 on the east side of the Baptistery.

So one set of doors was hung in 1424 and the other in 1452 and I started in 1401. That’s over fifty years of work on two sets of doors! This really was my life work!

I didn’t have time to do much else, but about this second set of doors, another artist named Michelangelo, who some consider to be the greatest artist who ever lived –

…but I don’t know him, do you? – Anyway, Michelangelo said about this second set of doors, “They are worthy to stand at the Gates of Paradise.”

So they are often called the “Gates of Paradise” now. You should come to Florence, Italy to see them! Almost as a signature, I did include a small sculpture of myself on them, a self-portrait.

And here is another self-portrait sculpture of myself on the Duomo di Firenze or the Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore.

    Teaching Children How to Listen

Listening is essential! In our highly visual world where both adults and children spend hours focusing our eyes on televisions, computers, video games, and electronic devices, we distinctly overlook how important it is to listen.  Listening is the cornerstone of development. A baby first orders its world through sound, since one is unable to see in the womb and since a baby’s sight is unfocused at birth.  Yet a baby is able to hear and distinguish his or her mother’s voice in the womb.  Next, in order to communicate and develop language skills, a child must learn to listen.  And…

Why Participate in Classical Conversations Classical Conversations because it is a Christian homeschool community which utilizes the classical model. El Greco Biography for Kids

Hello, my name is Doménikos Theotokópoulos. But people call me El Greco. It is Spanish for “the Greek.”  I was born on the Greek island of Crete. You know where Crete is in the Mediterranean Sea, right? I studied painting as a young man at a monastery so my first artistic influences were creating Byzantine style religious icons, which are pictures of saints in churches. These paintings look kind of flat and lacked expression. Later, I went to Italy to study and learned to draw the human figure like Giotto so that my people were three-dimensional. Then I studied Renaissance…

Are you thinking about homeschooling? During the COVID shutdowns, we all got a little taste of homeschooling. Roy Lichtenstein Biography for Kids

Hi there! My name is Roy Lichtenstein. I am an artist who helped start the genre of Pop Art. I was born in New York City in 1923. Growing up, I was interested in drawing and science and the way mechanical things worked. I lived near the American Museum of Natural History, so I spent hours exploring the exhibits of dinosaurs, plants, animals, bugs, mummies, stars and planets. I read science magazines and listened to radio programs – if you can believe it, there was no such thing as television when I was a boy – and my favorite radio…

Vincent van Gogh Biography for Kids

Hello, my name is Vincent van Gogh. I am a Post-Impressionist painter, and I’d like to tell you my story. This is the Vincent van Gogh biography for kids. I was born in Groot Zundert, Netherlands in 1853. My father was a pastor of a Dutch Reformed Church, so I learned the Bible growing up, but even from my youth, I was often depressed and suffered from a mood disorder. I did not study art formally while growing up, and by age 16, I went to work in an art dealership in The Hague, a city in the south of…
