Best Thanksgiving Books for Kids

Thanksgiving is an especially valuable holiday to pause and remember our history and to thank God for all He has done for us.

As we seek to redeem every holiday with our children by pointing them to God, one way of enjoying the holiday and teaching its meaning is through the many wonderful Thanksgiving books for kids.

History of the Thanksgiving holiday

The history of Thanksgiving is of a people who desired to venerate God in every aspect of their lives, so we can start by teaching our children the history of the Pilgrims, the journey on the Mayflower, and Plymouth Plantation.

The history of the holiday in America starts with the story of the Separatists (later called Pilgrims).  After leaving England to enjoy religious liberty in Holland, they decided to further separate themselves from worldliness by coming to a new country.

After reaching Massachusetts instead of the Virginia colony when storms blew them north, they decided to stay in Massachusetts and settled Plymouth. They suffered through a difficult first year, but with the help of Squanto, they were able to plant and harvest.

At the end of their first year, the Natives and Pilgrims celebrated together in what we now call the first Thanksgiving. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863.

Why Would I Rob Myself of Joy?

Psalm 30 1I will exalt you, Lord,    for you lifted me out of the depths    and did not let my enemies gloat over me.2 Lord my God, I called to you for help,    and you healed me.3 You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;    you spared me from going down to the pit. 4 Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;    praise his holy name.5 For his anger lasts only a moment,    but his favor lasts a lifetime;weeping may stay for the night,    but rejoicing comes in the morning. 6 When I felt secure, I said,    “I will never be shaken.”7 Lord, when you favored me,    you made…

    Teaching Children How to Listen

Listening is essential! In our highly visual world where both adults and children spend hours focusing our eyes on televisions, computers, video games, and electronic devices, we distinctly overlook how important it is to listen.  Listening is the cornerstone of development. A baby first orders its world through sound, since one is unable to see in the womb and since a baby’s sight is unfocused at birth.  Yet a baby is able to hear and distinguish his or her mother’s voice in the womb.  Next, in order to communicate and develop language skills, a child must learn to listen.  And…

How to Thrive (Not Just Survive) as a Homeschool Mom

Is it possible to thrive as a homeschool mom? I always wanted to be a mom. With six younger siblings, I usually had a baby or toddler around to play with until I was a teenager. I would play dolls and dress them up, play school, and even pretended to be Mary Poppins. What could be better than being a mom with my children all day? There were a number of things I didn’t understand about mothering and homeschooling though, obviously. For one thing, my mom did not homeschool, so she appeared to have time to herself to do things…

The Pumpkin Patch Parable: Book Review

We choose not to celebrate Halloween, commemorating Reformation Day instead, but we love fall and pumpkins and having fun at pumpkin patches. Our third child was born in October, so we called her Pumpkin even before birth. When she was almost two, I found a delightful book at the library, which tells the story of God’s care for His people through choosing them and cleaning their hearts in Christ in the form of a parable about a pumpkin farmer. If you love fall and want a simple story to teach your child about new birth in Christ through one of…
